Radiant Heaters: The Alternative Way to Heat Your Home

Radiant Heaters: The Alternative Way to Heat Your Home

Choosing a heating system for your home is not easy; the huge variation of information and products available can seem daunting and confusing to the prospective customer. As one of the newest and greenest heating technologies on the market, radiant heaters are becoming an ever increasingly popular way of heating a home. Although they may sound complicated, these hugely effective heaters in fact function very simply; could they be the new way to heat your home?

Radiant Heaters: How Do They work?

In order to heat a room, radiant heaters use infrared, which is a form of radiated heat. Sound scary? It’s not! Infrared heat is 100% natural and safe; it’s the form of heat that we absorb from our surroundings and that we emit ourselves. Any natural heat you feel, whether from the sun, open fires, or even other people, is all infrared heat.

This infrared heating is the main feature that distinguishes radiant heaters from other heating methods, such as radiators or storage heaters. These heating systems use convection to heat a room, which means heating only the air, and relying on air currents to circulate this heated air around the room. Due to its nature, this heat can be very easily lost through draughts and open doors, incurring unnecessary costs to bring a room back up to the desired temperature. Contrary to this, infrared heaters use radiation, which travels through the air to heat people and objects directly. Therefore, the objects in your room, such as furniture and walls are also heated, and in turn they also emit radiant heat, allowing for an even, comfortable temperature throughout the whole room. With infrared, draughts have minimal effect on the temperature of the room, so the temperature is maintained at a far more constant level. This means that you can lower the temperature of your thermostat by as much as 5°C compared to your current heating system, and still feel the same level of comfort!

Why Choose Infrared

With thermostatic control, infrared heating can be up to 60% more efficient than conventional heating methods. But if that is not incentive enough, here are some of the other ways infrared is superior to its more traditional competitors.

Save Money and the Environment

Although a more expensive initial investment, in a matter of years a radiant heating system can bridge that initial price gap, and then begin saving you money in the long run. Due to the lack of heat lost because of draughts and circulating air, less power is required to heat your room in the first place. Setting your thermostat a few degrees lower will lead to huge savings on your heating bills. While oil and gas are currently more economical than electricity, prices will inevitably rise as fossil fuels become scarcer, and, furthermore, electricity can be generated from renewable energy sources, making them a far eco-friendlier option. You could even generate your own infrared heat from solar panels on your roof! Radiant heaters, such as our infrared heating panels, are free of carbon emissions, making these products the green heating solution of the future.

Unlike central heating, which ages quickly and requires regular servicing, infrared heaters do not require maintenance and have extremely long lifespans. While not requiring maintenance themselves, they can also help look after your home. Have you ever had a damp problem in your home? Radiant heaters warm your walls, keeping them dry and free from damp, rot and peeling paint.

Allergies

It is a little known fact that radiators and storage heaters can exacerbate allergies because, as the air moves around the room, so do the allergens. As radiation does not exaggerate air currents like convection does, you eliminate this problem. Additionally, heating the air can cause humidity to fall, which can dry skin and encourage asthma and other health problems. Your current heating method may be the culprit you never expected! Our Herschel Infrared Heaters are the perfect heating solution for allergy sufferers.

ControlHerschel Inspire White Panel

Do you want complete control over your heating? Then radiant heaters could be the answer for you. All our panels are compatible with thermostats and other heating control devices, meaning you only have to heat the room, or area of a room, that you want to. Compare this to central heating systems, which run off a single, central thermostat; or storage heaters, which require overnight charging in order to release heat during daytime, and you have a far greater level of control.
