    The Ecostrad Thermaglo is compatible with DIY fitting, provided it is plugged into a socket with a suitable IP rating. Permanently installing the Thermaglo outside will require the services of a professional electrician as the heater must be hardwired to the mains.

    The Thermaglo can also be installed indoors, either as a wall mounted heater using the brackets provided, or as a free-standing unit when used with a compatible tripod (not supplied). Each Thermaglo comes with a fitted UK plug for indoor use – we do not recommend using the Thermaglo with an outdoor socket during wet weather.

    It is possible to use the brackets provided to ceiling mount the Thermaglo. For more information, please see the installation instructions in the manual. Always ensure that the Thermaglo is installed more than 180cm from the floor and 50cm away from the ceiling and any surrounding walls.

    The IP55 rating of this patio heater means that the housing will prevent the ingress of most fine particles and is resistant against low pressure jets of water. This rating is more than suitable enough for the majority of outdoor installations, however for particularly harsh, exposed locations, you may need to seek a product with a higher protection rating.

All Thermaglo heaters use the same IR frequency so you can control any number of heaters with the same remote – a useful feature for larger installations.

Infrared Heating Technology

Infrared heaters make first-rate patio heating solutions because of the type of heat they use. Rather than heating the surrounding air as per conventional heating solutions, they use radiation to provide a direct form of warmth. Radiant heat travels through the air and warms any person, object or surface it comes into contact with for a direct and efficient heat transfer. The best part about infrared patio heaters is that all of the energy they use is converted into usable heat, and as infrared isn’t affected by air movement, none of their warmth is ever lost on the breeze.

The type of infrared used by Thermaglo heaters falls within the upper mid-range of the spectrum – stronger than the longwave infrared of a ceramic heater, but gentler than the near infrared of a standard quartz heater. This less intense form of heat used by Thermaglo heaters has all of the benefits of near infrared with none of the drawbacks. Its vigorous heat still works wonders in outdoor applications where users are more exposed to lower air temperatures, but it has a reduced level of light emission that’s much more pleasant.  

The reason the Thermaglo is able to produce a moderate heat is because it uses a carbon filament within the quartz bulb rather than a tungsten filament. Carbon filaments are a new innovation in infrared heating and allow the production of a more mellow form of heat. They take a few seconds to get to temperature, but once they do, their strong radiant warmth can be easily felt. Aluminium reflectors within the heater housing assist in projecting this heat out to where its most needed and also help to reduce the amount of light produced by the bulb. If you’re looking for an outdoor heater with a less intense light, carbon filament quartz heaters are an excellent option – the Thermaglo emits a soft, rosy glow that’s cosy yet discreet.

Installation & Safety

One of the main plus points of the Thermaglo is its rugged IP55 protection rating which means it has an almost dust-tight housing and resistance to low pressure jets of water. This makes it suitable for permanent installation outside, however it will work just as well in a garage or conservatory space. A 2 Year Manufacturer’s Warranty comes with these heaters as standard and the lifespan of the carbon element is estimated at 10,000 hours of use.

Ecostrad Thermaglo infrared heaters are supplied with a fitted UK plug for indoor use and can be wall mounted using the hinged brackets provided. It can also be used with a compatible stand (not supplied) if you prefer your heater to act as a free standing, portable unit. For permanent outdoor installations, the Thermaglo must be hard-wired to the mains by a professional electrician. Alternatively, it can be DIY installed when connected to a plug socket with a suitable IP rating.
