It’s approaching that time of year when we all start thinking about heating solutions for the outdoors. Sure, the sun is beautiful when it’s out, but sometimes you want to keep the party going after it sets and it can start to get a little chilly. For an increasing number of homes far infrared heating is the answer, but there are still many who aren’t sure about the energy saving potential it has to offer. Here are a few questions that we get asked frequently about outdoor infrared heating…

I want infrared heaters outside, but will I need to an electrician to install them?

It really does depend on the route you take and the product you buy. Of course, if you’re hardwiring electronics into your home from the garden it’s a good idea to get a professional electrician involved, but you can always plug them in and go if you’ve already got waterproofed sockets available. Most infrared heaters designed to work outside will come with everything you need to get going right out of the box, and you should experience any problems when firing them up and getting started.

Why shouldn’t I just get a standard gas patio heater or wood burner?

These are solutions that have long since been used to heat gardens across the country, and they work pretty well. However, there are two big things to think about when considering either a wood burning stove or gas patio heater – energy efficiency and how they impact the environment. Infrared is far more energy efficienct than other methods of outdoor heating (for reasons we’ll get to in just a moment), and they’re naturally a lot worse for the environment (particularly burning wood).  So regardless of where you priorities lie – whether you’re green minded or finance minded – there’s a good reason to choose infrared.

You said that infrared heaters are more efficient outside. How?

Infrared heaters don’t heat the air like a conventional radiator, patio heater or wood burner – there’s no convection or blowing of air, no moving parts and no noise.  Infrared heaters heat the objects in your garden, working in exactly the same way as our sun when it’s rays beat down and warm the ground. The objects nearby – your furniture, walls and even you and your family – will retain this heat and release it slowly and naturally, and you won’t even feel it. Because of this, infrared heaters deliver some of the most even and consistent heat you could hope to get in a garden!

Do they require a lot of wall space? Won’t they look bad?

Heaters in the garden come in many different shapes and sizes, and that’s true for infrared heating panels as well as everything else. Most can be kept up high, out of reach of children and out of line of sight, and others can be concealed or cleverly hidden. How you choose to fit your infrared heaters is up to you, but there are a variety of options at your disposal which will help you maintain the aesthetic in your garden.

The possiblities with infrared heaters are pretty endless, and once they’re a part of your garden and they’re working in the background to keep you and your family nice and warm, you won’t even realise they’re there!
