If you’re in the market for a new home heating system, perhaps due to buying a new property or replacing a broken boiler, you’ll know that the market has become quite diverse. Due to leaps technology and a greater need for cleaner, greener energy, there are now a fantastic range of products to choose from, from designer electric radiators to infrared panel heaters. People on the hunt for a more cost effective way to heat their home are often rather surprised to learn how functional and efficient panel heaters are, and these are some of the most common questions we encounter every single day.

What are infrared panels? How do they work?

Infrared panel heaters aren’t magical, although they may seem that way on first inspection. They don’t radiate heat the same way as a radiator or convection heater, and there’s no air movement to speak of. A convection heater would typically blow heat into around the room, and a radiator, depending on its type, would traditionally ‘push’ warmth out into the surrounding air to distribute heat around the room.  An infrared panel heater does neither. It simply radiates heat into the room and heats the objects and walls nearby. It works the same way as the sun, which heats the ground, the walls, the objects (and us) in its wake. So there’s no distribution of air – only heat to nearby objects, which then slowly emit the stored heat into the surrounding room keeping temperatures constant and balanced.

But what’s the point? Is it more cost effective?

In a well insulated home and infrared panel heater can be the ideal money saving solution for keeping warm. Because it heats nearby objects (rather than the air around them) it won’t have to work as hard to keep the room at a desired temperature, which means it can potentially save you a small fortune. Many infrared panel heaters now come with advanced timers and dials to give you more customising which can also add to their money saving potential. Of course, we can’t determine what you pay for you energy usage (that depends on your supplier), but we can confirm that infrared heaters can certainly help you trim down your energy usage if used correctly. If you’re unsure, you’re always welcome to give us a call (details below).

What sized panel should I buy?

In this regard, panel heaters are no different to any other heater – it really depends on the size of the room you want to heat. It’s true that you’ll need less wattage per square meter with an infrared heater than you would with almost any other heating product though – mainly because of the way they work. At Infrared Heaters Direct, our team have worked out the perfect formula for calculating wattage per square meter for infrared heating panels – why not ask one of them?

Aren’t they quite ugly?

Far from it. Infrared panel heaters are probably one of the most customisable heating solutions on the market today. They’re essentially flat, and you place them on your wall like you would a mirror or picture frame, and that’s precisely what many people decide to do. You’re infrared heater could be hidden behind a mirror in the bathroom or a painting in the lounge… the possibilities really are endless, and you won’t even notice them working as they keep your home toasty and warm in the background.

What about installation?

Installation never been easier, particularly if you choose one of our ranges here at Infrared Heaters Direct. A panel heater can be hard wired into the wall with the help of an electrician, but we also make sure that each one of our heaters is supplied with a 3-pin plug which can be plugged into any standard socket. This means that your heaters are literally ‘plug and play’ out of the box. They’re light, easy to fit and you can move them around if they aren’t hardwired in.
